Where Did He Go?
June 1998
It's time to call it a day ...
Well, folks, with heavy heart I've decided to put my comic strip FRUMPY THE CLOWN, to bed.
I have several reasons for putting the clown down, not the least of which is the fact that Frumpy has been running for close to two years and hasn't created a significant presence on the comics page. Frumpy current runs in three papers. This makes doing the strip a VERY time consuming hobby.
The only reason to stick with it would be if it were a labor of love, which it no longer is.
I find the comic strip format very limiting, creatively, for me. I have other fish to fry and most of the subjects can't be broached in mainstream syndicated comics. I find that comic strips limit my ability to tell a story and that's what I've always wanted to do.
So, we move on. In the upcoming years, I will be exploring comic books, graphic novels, and animation. Thankfully, not only do I have an interest in these areas of work but there are people who produce them who are interested in me. So, we'll see...
But, none of them will initially involve Frumpy.
The last bit of Frumpy news is that we may attempt to put a FULL archive of the strip on the site. That is, every Frumpy strip in this run.
I will also try to publish a collection of Frumpy. It will most likely be a small publisher in the Bay area. Now, lastly, for all of you who have faithfully read and enjoyed Frumpy over these two years: I'm sorry.
I know you must feel like I've let you down and I acknowledge the fact that I have. I just simply don't love the work anymore. I hope that the projects I produce in the future will excite you as much as this comic strip did. I actually hope that they excite you more!
Thank you all again for all the kind letters over the year and I will keep you posted via this site as to what work of mine is coming out.
Thank you again.
Hugs and fishes,
Judd
